Tiger trout are a sterile hybrid between brown trout and brook trout, produced intentionally by hatcheries for their striking appearance and aggressive feeding behavior. Their sides display a dramatic marbled or vermiculated pattern unlike any other trout. Because they're sterile, tiger trout put all their energy into growth rather than reproduction, growing faster than purebred trout. They're primarily stocked in waters with undesirable rough fish populations — tiger trout aggressively consume small perch, suckers, and other undesirables.

Catching Tips

Tiger trout are highly aggressive and will hit nearly any presentation. Large streamers and small crankbaits retrieved quickly are often more effective than subtle approaches. They compete less with hatchery rainbow trout for food, so you may find them in spots other trout avoid. Look for them near undercut banks and deep pools.
