Rainbow trout are the most widely stocked freshwater fish in the United States. Prized for their fighting ability and table fare, they thrive in cold, clear rivers and lakes. Wild fish display a distinctive pink-to-red lateral stripe with black spots scattered across the body. Stocked fish are typically 8–14 inches long and immediately catchable. They feed aggressively shortly after stocking, making them ideal for beginners and seasoned anglers alike.

Catching Tips

Fish near the stocking point within 48 hours for best results. PowerBait in chartreuse or rainbow colors fished on the bottom is the go-to for still water. In rivers, drift a size 10–14 egg fly or a small spinner through pools and runs. Early morning and late evening produce the most action.
